by Skylar Schroff  from United States

New Mexico is a beautiful state that is often ignored of all its glory. Some confuse it with Mexico, others believe that it’s just desert where not a single soul dwells. I am going to show some of the hidden treasures of New Mexico, and all the amazing things I love about it. I hope that as you read and see that you grow to appreciate all that is New Mexico.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a festival consisting of over 600 hot air balloons. The family friendly event is held in the early mornings and evenings the first week of October. The fiesta is a nine day event, with crowns exceeding over 80,000 people. The festival is the largest hot air balloon event in the world. The event itself is so beautiful, but my favorite thing about The Balloon Fiesta is the New Mexico skyline during this event. I walk outside and my gaze is immediately taken directly to the hundreds of balloons decorating the horizon. The Balloon Fiesta is a family favorite and a must for the Albuquerque locals.

White Sands National Monument

White Sands National Monument (White Sands) is located in the northern Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico. White Sands is best known for the landscape of rare white gypsum sand. Unlike beach sand, the sand is as the name entails white. The white color reflects the heat of the sun and the tiny grains create a soothing texture on the feet. It’s a fun place to go with friends and family and enjoy the day together. Locals bring sleds and inner tubes to go down the sand dooms. Picnics are a must on the exotic sands to wait for the breathtaking sunset. The sunsets on the dooms are a magical experience. Especially if you enjoy photography, the orange and yellow lit skies are a memory you won’t want to forget.

Camping in New Mexico

Camping is a must do, despite our states reputation; there is not only desert in New Mexico! New Mexico is great for camping, fishing, hiking, star gazing, rock climbing, hunting, winter sports and activities. Being outside is a great way to unplug from the chaos of world and connect with God and His creation. Fenton Lake was my childhood camping ground, and current favorite place to be outside.  Fenton is located in Jemez New Mexico, known best for its large lake fishing, stream fishing, and its beautiful hiking trails. My fondest memories are fishing with my dad, s’mores over the campfire, and hiking the trails with my family.

Coffee Shops and Restaurants

I don’t know about you, but  when I go on vacation I like to break away from the daily routine of Starbucks coffee and McDonalds burgers.  Here are some local coffee shops and restaurants that are my go-to!

Humble

4200 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque New Mexico 87110.

Humble is a low-key café that serves fresh coffee and pastries. Humble is more of a grab and go kind of place. The café is located in downtown Albuquerque, it makes grabbing a quick cup of coffee easy before and hitting the town. Humble is the perfect New Mexican coffee shop to transform a tourist mindset into a local New Mexican.

The People of New Mexico

Our people are what make New Mexico truly incredible. New Mexicans are unique and filled with life. No matter where I’ve been and what I’ve seen, no one has compared to the people of New Mexico. We value our culture and hold dear to our traditions, when you are in New Mexico you feel a part of New Mexico. You belong to a tight knit community; everyone knows everyone, and when one hurts we all hurt. New Mexico is truly the Land of Enchantment.
